Confucius was a Chinese philosopher, teacher, politician of the Chinese history. His philosophy, is mainly based on personal and governmental morality, correctness, justice, sincerity and benevolence. Following the victory of Han over Chu after the collapse of Quin, Confucius’ thoughts were further developed into a system known as Confucianism.
Confucius’ principals had an important influence on Chinese tradition and belief. He emphasized strong family loyalty, respect of elders by their children, respect of husbands by their wives. His principle “Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself” is worldwide a well-known wording which can help to better understand his ideas. For Confucius the morality was essential and he knew that this advise could be the key word for the humanity as long as it was not abused. However, as always politicians knew very well how to use it whenever needed and to forget it whenever it is a handicap to reach their targets and this has been the case in China as well.
Conficius believed in the importance of the education and tried to explain that this was the right of the whole population not only for a high level, rich persons. This can be the base of the communism in China, trying to give equal rights to everybody. People had complete trust on Confucianism and this facilitated the work of the communism as the equal right policy was common with Confucianism. People were familiar with this idea but unfortunately, this has not been the case. The equal rights of Confucius which was based on the piece and wealth of his society was quite different from the ones that the government tried to impose with communism.
The new Chinese generation is much more well educated when compared with the old generations. They all try to learn foreign languages, which is essential for their economic growth. Furthermore, education is considered as a family business. Chinese parents think that the educational success or failure of their children is influenced by their parenting. They believe that they have the obligation to help their children in their educational achievement. This is their family duty and in case of an academic failure, they think that they did not do their best to help their kids to achieve this goal. This is a complete reflection of Confucianism on the educational and family life.
According Confucius, working is the main tool for success. His quote “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life” reflects his complete philosophy ,which can be one of the main tool of Chinese economic growth. As we all know, the labor power is one of the biggest advantage of the Chinese economy. China has the cheapest labor cost in the world. These labors are all grown-up with the working philosophy of Confucius and it may be that they have learnt how to be happy by working. They all know that, working is the only way to success and this is well noticed with the development of their economy.
Although Chinese social life is highly influenced by Confucianism, the government’s rule of having only one child imposed is totally against Confucius. This does not mean that Confucius’ values have been abandoned. The family values seem to remain but they may be reinterpreted according to the new economic, social necessities or they may be obliged to accept this rule by the force of the communism.
Chinese people give extremely big importance to trustworthiness and benevolence in the business. This is a complete reflection of Confucius ideas. Although they use different tools in international business, they make business agreements, for them the essential is the promise given. Once they agree on the main topics and give their promises, they believe on complete trust. However, there is an important conflict at this point as they are reticent to use credit cards in internet. They are afraid of giving their credit card numbers in web pages and therefore e-shopping is not developed in China. This is completely contrary to the philosophy of Confucius who believed on complete trust.
We can say that Confucius is a significant power on Chinese social and economic life since his thoughts and ideas have been accepted as life principals. Thinking about his positive approaches for being a sensitive human being and his believes on working, it is normal that a society grown with his ideas is one of the biggest economy of the world.
