Wikileaks is an international non-profit organisation that publishes submissons of private, secret and classified media from anonymous news sources and new leaks. There are lots of discussions about how ethical what Wikileaks does.
According to SPJ code of ethics, a journalist should seek truth and report it, minimize harm, act independently and be accountable. If we evaluate what Wikileaks did considering these terms, then we will see that there is nothing wrong about it.
According to SPJ codes, ‘Journalists should be honest, fair and curageeous in gatheringi reporting and interpreing infrmation.’ . What Wikileaks did is not against this. Most of their sources are people working for the government so the source is dependable.
About the second rule which is ‘Ethical journalists treat sources, subjects and colleagues as human being deserving of respect.’, they did not do anything against this too. Nothing disrespectful happened.
Third rule, journalists should be free of obligation to any interest other than the public’s right to know; Wikileaks did not take sides on this topic, they were totally objective while publishing these information.
Last of all, one of the most important rule that says ‘Journalists are accountable to their readers, listeners, viewers and each other.’. There is no record that shows that Wikileaks did something unaccountable. So what Wikileaks did has nothing against the SPJ code of ethics.
In conclusion, Wikileaks did not do anything except their job, to make the public know about what is going on. They helped us to see the facts, and that is what all true journalists should do.
