What Are We Paying for: Amusement or Abusement?
Zoos have been a source of entertainment for kids, tourists, teenagers and families throughout the years. However, many animals are being abused in zoos and even though it is claimed that many zoos are for the ‘protection’ of the wild life and the species near extinction, according to foundations like PETA and WWF, zoos and aquariums are huge threats for the animal species. This threat occurs not only because animal species are separated from their life in the wild and put under restraint in cages, but also because they are being abused, tortured and killed.
Recently, in a zoo in Copenhagen, Denmark, a baby giraffe named Marius was murdered, because they did not have enough space for him in the zoo. Even though a British zoo had offered a place for him, he was shot in the head, and fed to the other wild animals.
Another zoo famous for torturing animals is a zoo in Indonesia. It is called the Surabaya Zoo, also known as ‘the zoo of death’. Surabaya was once very famous and important for including many species; however, recently it has become a place where many animals have been murdered. A lot of animals were found starving, a pregnant deer was found dead, and a young lion was found hung with chains. Even many endangered animals such as komodo dragons were killed in this zoo.
Zoos are not the only places where animal abuse is seen. SeaWorld is a famous amusement park, which joins many parades, such as the Rose Parade, or the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) organized a protest against SeaWorld, right outside one of these parades. One of the members, wearing an orca suit, got into a tiny tank full of water. This was a protest in order to make people realize how savage and violent it is what they pay for.
