9 days ago, an environmental protest started in Taksim, Gezi Parkı. People who do not want government to build a new shopping mall to a park stayed there and did not let anyone touch the trees. On the 4th day of the protest, police arrived and used violence to people and after that all the country started to protest the government under the name of “occupygezi”. The prime minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was the one who everyone blamed and they wanted him to quit. Turkish media was not showing anything, so international media made news about this situation and ofcourse about R.T. Erdoğan and his good or bad leadership. Tayyip Erdoğan spoke like he doesn’t care about anything and his behaviour made everyone angry and everyone started protesting more. CNN International made a news about Erdoğan’s leadership and how people in his own neighbourhood think about him.
CNN International discussed Erdoğan’s leadership in their, “Turkey’s Erdoğan: Successful leader or dictator?” article. Erdoğan was born in Kasımpaşa and citizens who live in Kasımpaşa love Erdoğan because what he does seems beneficial to them. Although most of the country protests against him, it does not make Erdoğan weak. He’s powerful and everyone knows that. Maybe, because of his power he is very comfortable. We can relate Erdoğan’s life to Robert Nozick’s theory. In his theory he does not believe to birth lottery. He believes that it doesn’t matter where you were born or in what conditions you were born you can build up your own life and you can change your life. It’s in your hands. Erdoğan was not a lucky person and he lived bad things in his life and now whether people hate him or not, he’s one of the most powerful leaders and a good debater who knows to sound right when he’s not right. The article is about how he leads. Most of the government says that he’s like a dictator or he’s becoming a dictator, but some of the people who agrees with his thoughts think that he’s just a successful leader and nothing more.
In his theory, Nozick asks us “If we were given the choice, would we choose a fake-machine-induced experience of a wonderful live over real life?” In his theory, he does not believe to birth lottery. He thinks that you can choose your own life, and the place that you were born, or the things around you cannot be an excuse. If you study, ıf you work you can decide and choose eveything you want to do. We can relate, this question to a question that Gezi Parkı and Prime Minister Tayip Erdoğan asks us. “If we were given the choice, would we choose a good-ecenomy-induced experience of a wonderful life over self-chosen free life?” In one part, you want a free life that you choose and you want to live, and in other part you want a wonderful life with good ecenomy and etc. This Gezi Parkı situation makes us think about this questions because in this protests you want a wonderful life but at the same time, you want freedom and peace. Reporters startes to make news and write articles about Erdoğan after this protests started and after people started to think about these questions.
– Nozick, opposite to Rawles, did not believe in state interference and forced distributive justice. ”No end-state principle of justice can be continuously realized without continuous interference with people’s lives using violence.”
– Nozick believes that all should be done voluntarily, that the state should not interfere to find justice; because there can be no continuous justice without continuous interference with people’s lives; and that is not freedom of choice.
– Nozick asks us ”if we were given the choice, would we choose a fake-machine–induced experience of a wonderful life over real life?” We can relate this to such a question ”if we were given the choice, would we choose a good-economy-induced experience of a wonderful life over self-chosen free life?” This is the question Gezi Park and PM Erdoğan is asking us.
In conclusion, Erdoğan behaves in a strange mood about this protests and his speeches seem wrong to most of the people, but we cannot deny his power and everyone knows that. Maybe when he was born he was not like this, but now after years he is powerful; but he has to change in a better way, otherwise the citizens will protest more and more. And in another hand, there are a lot of unanswered questions which nobody knows how to answer, but we’ll see, because the protests are still happening.
