The co-founders of Backyard Brains, Greg Gage and Tim Marzullo created a project where you can control a cockroach.
The company ship live cockroaches attached with a microelectronic hardware and a surgical kit to control the cockroach to the people who want it. Electrodes that feed into their antennae control their movements.
Even though Gage says the roaches feel a little pain, which they quickly adapt and scientists control animals all the time behind closed doors, animal behavior scientists think they are seriously harmed and children shouldn’t play with living organisms. Some people think this will inspire more kids to join the field of neuroscience while some critics think that it encourages amateurs to operate and control living organisms with a smartphone.
