As technology develops, old habits diminish. This idea is valid for almost everything. For example, people had books and encyclopedias to gain information. Now we have internet and just by entering the key words of what we are looking for, we can reach hundreds of sources online. However even though books are not as useful as they used to be, we still use them. Traditional media is victimized the same way books are. People find it easier to follow the news online than following them on papers. As time goes by, Traditional Media loses its usage to Digital Media but just like books, it won’t be completely gone.
Firstly, even though in our day Digital Media is being used more, it has disadvantages just like Traditional Media. Digital Media for example, is not confidential at all. Anyone from anywhere can put false information online and we could be depending on it. In Traditional Media, this is a reason to discharge a professional journalist. A professional journalist should never make news based on unreliable research and sources. Digital Media can take information from anywhere and about anything and twist it. For example, any information from Wikipedia can be changed by any internet user and someone who has a blog can just take that false information and post it as support for false news. This is when an additional prohibition comes to mind: Plagiarism. A person can take information from another web site the way it is and paste it on its own blog. However, reliability is not only an issue of Digital Media. Traditional Media is not completely pure. Professional journalists are often not allowed to write against the government. The government is pressuring journalists and preventing their honesty. Many journalists lost their jobs because they couldn’t write freely. Oktay Ekşi can be an example of this. Digital Media is more objective since Wikileaks first occurred online. Traditional Media would have never been able to publish this information on sole grounds.
The same thing is current for one of the most current events of today. Elections for presidency are coming up however as they come closer, more secrets are revealed to sabotage the candidates. The recent game was played to Devlet Bahçeli. His inappropriate videos were released on the internet by his rivals. If a journalist was the first to find about this video, it would have never been published. That’s because the Traditional Media is not objective at all. Digital Media on the other hand is free and that’s why people sensor many things. The government wants to bring back the Traditional Media under the spotlight again so that people agree with them instead of questioning them. However just like internet, people can have different point of views by the Traditional Media. People can choose whether they want to agree with the newspapers or not. Internet is a free ambient so people usually choose to write bad things about the government since they can’t do anything about the newspapers. However people should also see news that supports the government so they can have an idea. You cannot see something clearly if you look from only one point of view.
We can’t also say that one trend of media is better than the other because they all have advantages just like they have disadvantages. Digital Media is the fastest way to learn what’s going on in the world. For example, the first place Osama Bin Laden’s death occurred as news was Twitter. Traditional Media tediously published already stale news about it only the next day. Digital Media is more open to interpretation and interaction. People can add comments below the information and people can have a different point of view after reading the comments. Traditional Media is not objective so it isn’t open to objective comments either. For example, a person who was irritated by a Turkish famous column writer Ayşe Arman’s daughter wrote a reclamation letter to her. Ayşe Arman got very angry, she published the letter and she even wrote an answer. This isn’t very fair because the man never had a chance to reply. Even if he did, Arman wouldn’t publish it so we wouldn’t know. However Digital Media may be as unreliable as the Traditional Media. That’s why their ascendancy can be argued.
To conclude, I believe that Digital Media will have more users as time goes by because even if it sadly and frequently has false information in it, it has some true ones also and at lightening speed. Also, it is more sharing, rebuttal and freedom of expression. However Traditional Media won’t be gone forever unless they can’t make money and won’t have a crowd to address it to.
