As humans, we live our daily lives so easy. Whether travelling to somewhere, whether flying for a holiday or backpacking through Europe. With today’s technology all we need to do is to buy tickets online. By the way, do we ever wonder how animals travel around the world? When it’s time for them to migrate, can they travel as easy as we do? Animals have to migrate for many reasons. It can be to give birth or find better conditions to live in. Do they have difficulties while migrating? All these issues we never really questioned and unfortunately, every year more and more animals are in the risk of becoming extinct and we as humans really aren’t doing anything about this.
So why are migrating animals under such difficulties and danger? The answer is very simple. The more we as humans get greedy expanding our residential areas, buildings, roads the more we make the migration routes of animals impossible.
Take the American antelope as an example. When it’s springtime, the time for them to migrate to be able to give birth they go through many difficulties. Their migration duration starts at springtime where they go to hotter places and give birth. They continue until they reach the south windy plains. It all sounds very straight and easy. Unfortunately, during this migration process, if they can’t reach Jackson Point to spend their winter, there is a risk of those antelopes freezing to death in the snow. The most important problem here is that there are only 200 American antelopes in the world and their numbers are going down. These antelopes have difficulty reaching Jackson Point is because of us humans. Our residential areas, roads, motorways, high fences put these animals in danger. We need to start showing awareness to this issue.
Another breed that is having difficulty in migrating is the red crab. Their journey is difficult for the female crab. This adventure takes place on Christmas Island, even though it’s a 5 mile journey between the forests because of crabs size it’s a difficult rote. After leaving 100.000 eggs, the female crab tries to make it back to the forest. Again, human factors puts these crabs under danger. People usually ran over them with a vehicle and this makes the red crabs journey not a very safe one.
We also see migrating animals in Turkey. The Atlantic tuna fish is trying to survive from fish nets in the Mediterranean sea. This fish is around 700 kilos and can become two meters long but even these futures don’t save it. The Atlantic tuna fish is also an expensive one so it’s very popular. Not only in tropical places or other sides around the world, we have migrating animals just next to us and we are still not doing anything to survive them.
We need to understand the seriousness of this issue. The next time you feel tired from travelling, maybe you should think about the difficulties of migrating animals. A lot of migrating animals are under danger and in the risk of becoming extinct. We need to act fast and bring awareness to help these animals migrate safely and to increase their numbers.
