If we look at the decrease in the sales of traditional media in the last 10 years, we can easily say that digital media started to become very important in our lives and it even started to be more common than traditional media. The digital media has lots of positive aspects when compared to traditional media. It maintains access to tons of information in only seconds while everybody is free to write anything they want. Moreover, the news is uploaded more currently in digital media, and most importantly, it is free. On the other hand, there is a limited amount of information in the traditional media. It is daily or weekly or monthly, it is paid and people are not allowed to write anything they want. Therefore, people choose the extensive, fast and the free one to gain knowledge about the world. However, ofcourse there are some problems about the digital media and conveniences about the traditional media to. Firstly, because the journalists who are writing in the internet are amateurs and most of the information on the internet is not confidential but in the traditional media, journalists are chosen and accountable and that’s why their writings are reliable.
So if we have a look at the conveniences and inconviences of traditional and digital media, we will understand that traditional media is used often for the Op-Ed articles, while digital media is used for current news such as sports or biased news. That is why, although today it seems that these two media types are competing with each other, they are actually complementing each other. Today, one of the biggest newspapers in the world, New York Times, is having financial problems, while Facebook has become one of the most valuable establishments in the world because of the increasing interest for the digital media. However, if newspapers only put the Op-Ed articles to the printed version and leave the rest to the internet, that will make these articles more valuable and there would be a huge variety of opinions in only one newspaper. Therefore, I believe there will be a change in the traditional media and in the future we will only have Op-Ed articles in the traditional media because it’s their only way to guarantee survival as free, independent and reliable entities.
The problem in these two media types is that their incomes are based on donations, advertisements or subscriptions, however the most reliable source is advertisements. Because of this fact, advertising companies interfere in the media and shape them. Just like these advertisement companies, politics have a huge influence on the media as well. To prevent these influences and interferences, media establishments should start uniting and become stronger.
