People have family, relatives, friends, friends of friends, someone who is sitting their nearby in bus or whatever, and they have relationships between each others. Sometimes the reason of the relationship is just love, but sometimes it is just for someone’s benefits. Relationships are really important for people’s lives, because people need to talk with someone, need to share something or whatever, but they need relationships, they have to have relationships. However, sometimes relationships are not innocent. There are a lot of people who has wishes, and so they utilize each others, and this shows that a lot of relationships leans a profit. In An Inspector Calls, because of political situations, instant pleasures and class recoveries; all characters in relationships between each others for their personal wishes.
First of all, in An Inspector Calls, there are a lot of characters and a lot of relationships. One of the main character is Arthur Birling, he is bourgeois and his aim is get respect from other people like an aristocrat or a noble. He has a lot of money, and he want to augment to his money. Besides, he want to an important place between the politicians, so he tries to contact with lords. Events pass in spring 1912, and the book shows a lot of influences from the time. In these years, Britain was face to face with different situations about politics, economy, folk, and something more. There are two parliament at Britain: House of Commons and House of Lords, and before 1912, House of Lords is more important, but in 1912, workers attends to House of Commons and House of Lords House of Commons starts to become equal, however, elite class believes that House of Lords can protect their power, so Arthur Birling tries to contact with lords. In Britain, who is from an aristocrat family or a noble family can enter the House of Lords and can have a right to say, but who is not only can enter the House of Commons and they do not have an important authorization. If Arthur Birling can contact with someone from House of Lords, he can gain a nice place from between people. Because of all these reason Arthur Birling try to match his daughter Sheila with Gerald who is from aristocracy class. This is shows that Arthur Birling utilize his daughter for his profits.
Second, Sheila and Gerald try to get married, but Sheila does not love Gerald. If she does, she cannot forgive him easily, because Gerald deceives her (whereas Sheila does not care about it and she accepts this). Sheila’s aim is same with her father, they want the same thing, the power. Gerald loves Sheila, but he does not respect to their relationship, so he deceives Sheila. He utilize someone, too, like the other characters and Eva is an example for this situation. When they meet, Eva was vulnerable and she needs help. Gerald can help her like a friend, but he does not prefer this right way. He prefers to utilize her being his mistress and when he spend a little time with her, he leaves her. Sheila is jealous Eva and she induces to get rid of Eva. Eric who is Arthur Birling’s son has a relationship with Eva, but Mrs. Birling does not let them, because she does not approve Eva for her family and talks with her. First Eva lost her job, then her boyfriends just for the others’ benefits.
In the third, there are not interest only between characters, there are something deeper in the book. The class of bourgeois utilize the workers. Workers always work, but they cannot get their desert. They do not have suitable conditions, educated, health, and any other rights. Lords utilize all people in the country, their voice is strong and authorized and they take decisions for their welfare behalf the ordinary people of country. Arthur Birling is a manufacturer and Gerald Croft is an aristocrat, its mean is they are from bourgeois and lords classes and they are politicians, too, so they have power and they use their power on the ordinary people.
As a result, if the question is how is the relationships between characters in An Inspector Calls, its answer is easy to say that they are not strong and lovely, on the contrary relationships are cold, weak and insincere. There is no love between connection of relationships, so hard to resume the relationship. People have something that they cannot resist, and they can make everything to possess it, until they can. The characters of the book have something they cannot resist, too, and this can be the occasion of a tragic event like Eva’s death, or maybe a public rebellion. Whatever, if someone wants something seriously, one can do everything to gain it, even construe some insincere relationships to serve one’s own aspirations.
