Mustafa Alkın is the Project Manager of Space Frame Systems, a company which has been making frame systems since 2004. They have made space systems for Antalya’s new domestic and international airport terminal, a hangar at Atatürk airport and innumerable other works in different countries.
What made you interested in space construction systems?
When I was a kid, I always looked up when I was in closed places and saw those metal parts. I wondered what they werefor a long time. So, I’m interested in space construction systems.
Did you used to play with lego? What was your favourite toy?
It is strange but I didn’t like playing with legos. My favourite toys were my cars.
What is the biggest space you have covered? What is the biggest space ever covered in the world?
Biggest space we covered was a bazaar in Kuwait. It was 108,000 m2 but I don’t really know biggest space covered in the world.
Who is your target market?
Our target market is people who are making closed sports fields, factories, storage facilities and shopping malls.
Why are your systems and products better than others?
We make stronger and lighter framed systems adaptable for all kinds of geometric shapes better than others, and we make them very economically. We have the best and most experienced team in this sector of construction.
Where do you see space covering systems in 10-50 years?
You were not able to see it 50 years ago very much but in about ten years, you will be able to see it almost everywhere which has a big space to cover.
Do you go to international exhibitions? Which country is the most advanced? Why?
Yes, I go to a lot of exhibitions but we can’t say this country is the most advanced because these systems are now nearly perfect and every good company in every part of the world can make a nice job of them.
What does a “roof” mean to you?
Basically, a roof means a “piece” that covers the highest point of a building. Space frame systems are very different from normal roofs.
Do you think human nature needs a roof? Can you cover roofs with different materials? Plants, water…
Human nature needs a roof because you need to protect yourself. You can’t cover it with different materials because there is lots of spaces between metals.
What is the funniest thing that has happened to you at work?
I think the funniest thing is this: we little men can produce a roof or a system that is A LOT bigger than us. Ironic, isn’t it?
