Within the juxtaposition people, media and leader we observe “Trust” as a fundamental concept. Without trust, the balance among the three is shaken and none of the institutions can function successfully.
People need trustworthy leaders who do not misuse people’s beliefs because people count on the leaders and they follow them. When this is broken, we can say that today’s uproars in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Syria are caused by the broken belief of people with their leaders. Thus, people trusted the media source Wikileaks which revealed the treasures of their leaders when they have to live on very little money. People also have trusted their own judgment and used network to publicize their cause. The leaders know the power of network and media and they have tried to stop the communication lines because they also own these sources. We can say that leaders trust the power of media but they seem to have forgotten how powerful they can go in providing communication network.
In Japan, after the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami, the Japanese people have kept their belief for their leader because they know that their leader would inform his public with real information. During and after the disaster they showed respect to their leader and obeyed the rules that their leader has set. Likewise, their leader has shown trust to the media and has not hidden any information. Eventually, the whole world has shown confidence in Japan with all the information which is broadcasted. The radioactive leak has been announced by their leader and he has not hidden any information from his people. Therefore we observe the juxtaposition of trust in Japan.
In Turkey, unfortunately, media has lost its informative value. Recently, one of the party leader’s fathers-in-law passed away and the headlines read that the 85 year old man has committed suicide. In 24 hours it was announced by the same media sources that he has had a heart attack. It is very sad to realize that the media informs people with their bias. How would one expect trust from a media source that acts like this?
It evident that trust is a must among people, media and leader. Trust is a balancing element and if it is lost then it is impossible to sustain silence in a society.
