Marc Quinn is a fifty years old, contemporary British artist who is known for “Self” which he made from his own frozen blood and “Alison Lapper Pregnant” which is a sculpture of Alison Lapper (it has been installed on the fourth plinth at Trafalgar Square). He investigates “the relationship between nature and culture as well as the interaction between art and technology through dependency.”
Approximately thirty pieces from his first solo exhibition, “Sleep of The Reason” are shown at ARTER for first time in Turkey.
What makes Quinn’s work special is that he inverts the aesthetic norms that were culturally standardized for the human body. For example, the sculpture below, is an American model who had breast augmentation surgery three times and for the ones that are wondering, her breasts are real!
